Professor Chew-Hung Chang has published extensively in geography, environmental and sustainability education. He leads the Strategic Growth Area of Assessment and Evaluation at the National Institute of Education (NIE) and serves as advisor to the NIE Centre for Assessment and Evaluation. He is also the Dean of Graduate Studies and Professional Development and Sustainability Officer at NIE, and Chair of the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Senate. Professor Chang also holds several international appointments, including Adjunct Professor of the East China Normal University and Co-Editor of International Research in Geographical and Environmental Education. He also serves on the Advisory Boards of the University College London Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education, the Global Environmental Education Partnership – Asia Pacific Regional Centre, as well as the Singapore Journal of Tropical Geography. He also serves as External Examiner to the University of Hong Kong Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Social Sciences programmes.
Abstract
Preparing Future-Focused Learners: Authentic Assessment for a Sustainable Planet
Sustainability education is an important strategy to respond to the global environmental challenges of our time, and it requires assessment that goes beyond testing knowledge to collecting and analyzing evidence of higher-order cognitive, affective and behavioural learning outcomes. This talk discusses the importance of authentic assessment by using examples from geography and sustainability education. Assessment when designed well, can engage learners with real-world challenges like climate change, thereby fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and even resulting in positive behavioral change that is pro-environmental. Teachers as designers of meaningful assessment, can also use feedback to deepen learning and connect students’ learning to real-world action. The presentation concludes by considering how the alignment across curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment empowers us to prepare future-focused learners for a sustainable planet.
